Round up of UCI World Road Championships 2011 - Part 3
The fifth event of the race was the 46.4 kilometre Elite Men time trial held on September 21. Tony Martin was participating in his first ever World Road Championships in Copenhagen as he does not seem to be troubled by any cyclist during the race. Martin
won the second gold medal for Germany finishing the race in 53:43:85 and had a solid lead of 1:15:83 over Bradley Wiggins of Britain. Four-time World Champion Fabian Cancellara could not finish the race any better as he secured the bronze medal.
After the race Martin mentioned that in the final kilometre he realised that it was possible to win and it was nothing less than a dream coming true. David Millar was one of the favourites before the race as Tony mentioned that after establishing a lead
of one and a half minutes over Millar he felt confident. David Millar of Great Britain finished at seventh position with 2:45:62 behind Martin. Azzedine Lagab of Algeria could not start the race as Semere Mengis of Eritrea was disqualified and Matt Brammeier
of Ireland failed to finish the race.
Lucy Garner won the second gold medal for Great Britain as she finished the 70 kilometre Junior Women road race. Lucy was at eighth position when she launched an attack and dominated the race with a huge lead. The 17-year-old stated after winning the race,
"I didn’t expect this. The team worked really hard and I couldn’t have asked for more from the team. They put in early attacks and I was just trying to keep sheltered during the whole race. On the last lap there were still two riders away but I did try and
give it a go but it all came back together."
There was also some joy for the home nation as Christina Siggaard won the bronze medal at the Junior Women road race. Manon Souyris of France and Christina Perchtold of Austria secured the fourth and fifth position. Urska Kalan, Jenny Rissveds, Allison Beveridge,
Mathilde Favre, Grace Alexander, Jessica Allen and Georgia Williams could not finish the race. Mieke Kroger of Germany and Rossella Ratto of Italy were looking good till the final kilometre but could not maintain the lead as Rossella finished at 11th
and Kroger finished in the 48th position.
France made their presence felt in the 168 kilometre Under-23 Men road race as the two French cyclists Arnaud Demare and Adrien Petit secured gold and silver medals for their country, Arnaud finished the race in 3:52:16. Andrew Fenn of Great Britain won
the bronze medal whereas Rudiger Selig of Germany was third while Marco Haller of Austria finished at fifth position. Demare was overwhelmed with the victory as he mentioned that he could smell the victory with 100 metres to go in the race. He further added
that he felt even better when he realised that his fellow citizen Adrien was right behind him.
Fenn congratulated the French riders as he was also disappointed on missing out on the gold medal. He mentioned that Demare and Petit truly dominated the race and gave him no chances towards the end. Fenn stated that the race had a difficult finish but the
French duo managed it perfectly without wasting any time.
