Question:

Roundoff Back handspring?

I have about a month until cheerleading tryouts, and i need to know a round off back handspring. I can do a good roundoff, and then i stop into a bridge, but that's about it. I'm in a tumbling class once a week, and i'm going to go twice a week now. I can't do a standing back handspring by myself, so how can I help this move come quicker to me? Do you think I have enough time to learn it?

  1. Trust your spotters to keep you safe, and make sure you are landing that round-off correctly for going into a BHS. You should be sitting in a chair position (butt should NOT be below your knees) chest up, back straight, and arms overhead and glued to your ears.

Land your round-off  stopping in the chair sit and do the BHS with your spotter in slow motion. Speed the BHS up over time until you are really going normal speed.

Don't forget to do drills at home everyday: http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0ge...  That will help you get these skills faster than just taking a couple classes for an hour or two a week.

    Good luck!

  2. if there is a trampoline available to you i would definatley use it. i found that by being able to do a back handspring on the trampoline it was a lot easier to do one on the ground. that is how i learned to do mine and yes i think that you have enough time to learn how i just think that you need to work hard and i might suggest adding another night of tumbling classes to your schedule take at least three a week if possible .

  3. Explain the situation to your coach. Ask him/her if there's anything you can do outside of class to strengthen yourself for the back handspring itself. But DON'T PRACTICE IT WITHOUT A SPOTTER UNTIL YOU CAN DO IT BY YOURSELF COMPLETELY!

I would suggest practicing holding bridges for extended periods of time (no longer than 1-2 minutes), and holding handstands (again, no longer than 1-2 minutes). Once you can do that, practice handstand pushups. If you can do back walkovers, practice those, but make it go faster, not so lazy-like. Kind of like a sped up back walkover, if you get what I mean?

Make sure you're doing all of this on a soft surface!! And please, don't do it on mattresses! Mattresses don't give even support, and they move around too easily. Practice on a gymnastics mat (I bought mine online cheap), or on soft grass outside. A little softness can go a long way.

If you're willing to work hard, I think you can make it. You just have to dedicate yourself to it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Eat, breathe, and sleep back handsprings. Once you get the back handspring, it's just a matter of connecting the roundoff and back handsprings. To be honest, I find the roundoff back handspring easier, because the roundoff gives you extra momentum, which helps you jump higher for your back handspring, which makes the whole thing easier.

    Good luck!
