  1. From my experience, roundoff backhandspring is alot easier than standing backhand spring, although i dont suggest you trying this stuff on your own with no trainer, but here are some tips.

For roundoff backhandspring, i would suggest first trying it with a run before, and at the end of your roundoffs, first try doing a jump right after teh roundoff, and after, once you get comfortable with that, the backhandspring will just sorta come. I do highly suggest your brother spot you for your backhandspring, and i would suggest doing it on a soft surface.

For standing backhandspring, you probably arent arching because you might not be able to do a back bend. Try doing a few of those, then once youre comfortable, try doing a bridge and pushing off with both legs, because thats basically what a backhandspring is, except its faster.

Once thats okay, i suggest you try doing it on something thats on a slant, I first started doing it on something called a cheese, which basically looks like cheese:P:P

If you dont have soemthing like that, try getting your brother to spot you, but be careful.

    Hope this helps! Good Luck!!!

  2. Learning a BHS on your own, even with your brother spotting, is dangerous. And to start with a roBHS is even worse. I hate spotting them because it can be hard to get in under the tumbler at the right time in the right place. You sure you want to trust your brother with that? You would have even more momentum than in a standing so if you crash on your head and neck, the odds of serious injury go up. A lot.

Why don't you start with basic BHS drills for a while first? They make sure you learn good technique and in the long run help you learn the skill faster and more safely.  http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Back+ha...

    Good luck and stay safe!

  3. wow, ur just like me, i could nt aford a gymnastic lesson so i learned a front handspring by my self. first, u might want ur brother to help, noone was willing to help me at my aunts house. and as for arching, make sure u can do a back bend easly. and just keep practising, safly

just do a roundoff, and with the momentum of the landing jump backwards into an arch and then a back handspring
