Peter Ashley picks up American Cup 14U singles trophy
Peter Ashley from Great Britain picked up the 14U boys’ singles crown at the American Cup in Florida. The fourteen years old, who practices at Bolton Arena, got the better of Christian Garin of Chile to earn his second singles
crown after quite a few weeks, following his win at the Eddie Herr International.
Peter, who was the number one seed to win the title, secured back to back straight set wins in the first two rounds. Afterwards, he overpowered Roman Nashatyrkin  of Russia and Alexandr Chepelev in three sets before making his
way into the finals, beating Elias Wondwosen of Sweden in two sets. The final match score was 7-6(5), 6-3.
The right hander follows in the footsteps of his fellow countryman, Luke Bambridge who captured the 14U boys’ singles crown last year when the competition was called the Prince Cup.
Meanwhile, Josh Sapwell was also playing in the 14U singles as a fifth seeded player. He triumphed in two clashes before eventually losing at the hands of Wondwosen in the fourth round.
George Hedley also made his way into the round of sixteen before falling in two sets to Sumit Nagal of India. The final match score was 6-3, 6-3. Shakeel Manji, on the other hand, won his first clash 6-2; 6-1, however later suffered
a loss to his third seed foe Dmytri Popko in three sets. The score line was 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-5.
Germany withdrawn from ATP World Team Cup host duties
Dusseldorf, Germany, has withdrawn from their duties as the host of the Association of Tennis Professionals World Team Cup. They have pulled out of their duties after successfully conducting the eight team competition for the last
thirty years, since 1978. The event was held just a few days prior to the start of the year’s second Grand Slam, the French Open in Roland Garros and was considered a major tune up for the French Open.
However, this time, Dusseldorf has failed to get any sponsors for next years competition in May.
New Haven competition shifts to Winston-Salem
With a lot of changes going on in the format and venues of the tour level competitions in their off season, the latest update came when the USTA and ATP World Tour made an announcement on Monday regarding the sale of the ATP 250
competition at New Haven to Salem.
As a result, the tournament will be conducted at the to-be-constructed tennis facility on the campus of Wake Forest University next year during the month of August.
The newly built tennis facility will have ten to twelve Deco-Turf II courts. The central court will have a seating capacity of almost three thousand five hundred spectators whereas a total of two show courts will be constructed
to accommodate fifteen hundred people each.
Adam Helfant, who is the current Executive Chairman and President of the Association of tennis professionals, while commenting about the venue said, “We are thrilled about the ATP’s new home at Wake Forest University, and thank
Don Flow and Winston-Salem Professional Tennis for bringing men’s professional tennis back to North Carolina. Globally, the game is enjoying one of the most exciting periods in its history, and it’s terrific that the tour will visit Winston-Salem as part of
its U.S. summer swing.”
The forty eight field competition begins on the 21st of August and ends on the 27th, with an overall prize money of $ 625,000. The competition is the final tune up to the year’s final major, the United States
Open in New York.
The Mayor, Allen Joines, while talking about the event shift to Winston-Salem said,
“Winston-Salem is thrilled at the opportunity to host this tournament. The community has a rich tennis history and we have a long tradition of supporting tennis. It is great to see Wake Forest and the corporate community partnering in such an innovative
way.  The tournament will have a significant economic impact and it will help ensure that this is a great place to live in the future."
