Does anyone know what the original French is for: "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains."?

  1. From Chapter 1. of Rousseau's "Du Contrat Social":

    "L'homme est né libre, et partout il est dans les fers."

    Translation: "Man is born free; and everywhere he is in chains."

    Variants: "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in shackles."

    "Man was born free, but is everywhere in bondage."
