Hey since forever Ive wanted to become a cop. I was wondering some helpful ways that can help me get the job and improve my chances. What college major works the best? How much would military experience help? How much would having a job as a security guard somewhere help out? Are there colleges that are specificaly best for this field? Are there colleges which end there schooling with entering and completion of of the Police academy?

Thanks Im just looking for Ideas, my grades arent too good I plan to get started in my comunity college and raise my grades then get into a regular college to get my deploma with a law enforcement oriented major.

  1. You should check out http://www.peaceofficerjobs.com for excellent advice about becoming a police officer. Criminal justice is a good major. However, there are several other good majors such as accounting, a foreign language, psychology, etc. A good major is any one that interests you and that would be at all beneficial to a law enforcement career. Any accredited college would suffice. Some colleges offer degrees such as a police technology degree in which the police academy is part of the degree. Police departments want well rounded, intelligent people with good common sense to join their ranks. Military experience is always a plus when it comes to trying to get a police officer job. Having a security job could benefit someone trying to become a police officer. Whatever jobs you work, make sure that you are considered an excellent employee (responsible, reliable, courteous, well groomed, etc.).

  2. Not all agencies require college, and they would always prefer experience to a criminal justice degree that everyone and their mother has.  If you want something valuable for a law enforcement career, take a language or psychology.  A 4 year degree will help you advance in your career faster, and federal agencies might require it.  You can always get a job as a cop and they will likely pay for your school that you can take part time, then a few years from now, you will have a few years of experience and a free degree, instead of a degree and debt..... good luck
