Hello, I was wondering, I have a a 1.5m by 756kbs internet connection and I am going to put an 802.11g wireless and break off so that there will be two total computers on the connection. What will be the speed break-up if both computers are on the internet at the same time?

  1. Wireless-N is about 4 times faster than G, but actively using two computers on the same connection will most likely split the speed in half so the computers get equal amounts of bandwidth.

  2. The purpose of a router isn't to split the Internet connection, but to allow it to be shared. Think of your internet connection as a glass of water, and each computer connected as a straw. Each computer will take what it needs: If you're running downloads on one, the other will be slower. The speed of the router will have nothing to do with internet speed- It can run at 250+ Mb/s, whereas your internet is only at 1.5. They *share* the connection, not *split* it. Hope this helped!

  3. Most off the shelf brand wireless switches do not have the capibility to equaly divide bandwidth. Its first come first serve. If you have two computers on the same connection you will probably get about equal speed from each computer the switch multitasks between the two computers sending data to bolth at seemingly the same time. But if you are limewireing your other pc user will notice the network lag. It also may be if you poke around in you wireless switches tools you may find a priority option. If you have a Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54 take a look at  Tomato Firmware, it gives you bandwidth monitroing and custom scripting options.
