Router question G vs N class?

Hi i have a class G router, im on same isp as my friend he gets 6 - 7 meg download speed on a class N router i get 3- 4 meg on a class G. Hes is a bt mine is a Netgear. Will the class difference make a big difference? Can you recomend a cheap to middlerange router, easy to config/install, i like netgear whats your take on them?

  1. Well the G and N have nothing at all to do with the DSL speed.  The DSL speed is controlled by the MODEM (which may be built in to the router) and the ISP's assigned speed.

      

    His may indeed be better and connect at a higher speed because 1, he subscribed to a faster service, 2. his modem is more compatible with the ISP's system.

    The only thing that N does faster is on the LOCAL connection not the internet download speed.  G is still way faster than a 6-7 meg internet line. So check your modem setup (may be in the router may be separate.) Check to see if 6 meg is even available from the ISP to you. The distance and lines available may not allow that speed to you. You can also check to see what modem/router they recommend for the most compatible service.  G vs N is not the issue here.
