i just got my cable/internet set up today, and the cable guy came and set up my modem and router too. they didn't make the network secure though. i tried to run the installation cd but it tells me i have to connect my computer directly to the router to make the network secure. is there any way that i can set a password for my network without directly connecting my computer to my modem?

  1. You have to access the router directly to change its settings, including making it secure.  You can access your router through any computer that is connected through it, so unfortunately, you'll need to connect your PC or laptop to the router (wired or wireless, it doesn't matter, as long as it's in the network).  The router's IP address is almost always 192.168.1.1.

Open this IP address in your web browser, and you should be able to access its configuration page, from where you can set up a security key.  If it asks for a login, try admin and admin for password, or just admin for user name.

    Hope this helps.
