Question:

Routes to becoming a Primary School Teacher

by  |  earlier

I am currently studying Maths with Statistics, Biology, Geography and English Literature at A Level. I would like to become a primary school teacher and have quite a bit of work experience at a few schools. I really don't want to go to university so was wondering if anybody knows if there are any other routes to teaching?

  1. You will need to have a degree to be a teacher.  However, Manchester Metropolitan University and many others offer a Primary School Teaching degree, which means you will be learning solely how to teach for 3 or 4 years.  Most of the time you would be on placement in schools.

  2. Firstly, there is no way to become a qualified teacher in England without having a degree of some kind.

You can either do a 4 year BEd degree which means you should be a qualified teacher at the end of the course (providing you pass!).

Or you can ensure you have a degree of some other kind (something remotely relevant to teaching is helpful!) and then take an emplyment based route (which means you teach in one school for the year i.e. training on the job) OR do a PGCE which is a college based route where you have placements in different schools throughout the year.

The employment based route is a much better salary but the PGCE is more widely recognised I think. Make sure you definitely want to be a teacher - it is bloody hard work!!

  3. I am afraid to become a teacher in the UK you have to have a degree from uni.  The only way of attaining that is to go to uni.  Im the mean time, if you don't want to go to uni yet, you could maybe get a job as a classroom support assistant - or whatever they're called now.. and get some more experience!

    Good luck

  4. Well what I did was that I found another school teacher, and I started talking to her a lot. Eventually I snuck up on her once when she was sleeping and I started hitting her w/ a crowbar. When she was dead, I took her to my basement and I skinned her w/ the same crowbar. It was hard but eventually I did it. Then I started wearing her skin and pretending that I was her. I got so good at being her that when summer ended I was able to take over her class. That's how I started teaching as Mrs. Fennel at Dana Middle School
