  1. Does it by any chance sound like a very 'throaty' sound when turning over? - If so, it could be pretty serious & to do with the variable tract manifold on the engine - yours, I assume, is the BMW unit. Very, very rare to have problems, an independent BMW specialist in your locale would be worth a call.

Just been checking around, on switching the ignition on, yoou should hear a 'whirr' as the pre injection pump primes the system. If you don't hear this, it could be a fault with this pump or it's relay (apparently more commonly the relay)

  2. please tell us what happened before you had this problem were you working on it???what did you do?

  3. Variable tract bollocks and as for the whirr from the low pressure pump Well what can you say.Check starter motor first if its going down then engine will not reach full cranking speed and will not energise crank position sensor also check for good connection to cam position sensor. This only pulses when starter engaged to tell ECU which stroke motor is on after fire up it does nothing.Check for damage to starter pinion or flywheel ring gear.Clean up crank sensor and make sure its clear of any swarf as this dampens magnetic flux and doesnt give a clean square wave pulse to ecu.Finaly check that you have a good earth on gearbox ,it goes to bolt on starter motor mounting face.
