To the rowers, what makes a good coxswain when you're on the water and what annoys you that a coxswain would do?

  1. A good coxswain:

    Will steer straight.

    Won't jabber on incessantly.

Doesn't say you're doing great when the boat sucks.  Then you have no credibility.

Pays attention to timing, timing, timing.

If someone's early, they'll wear out fast, and the boat slows down. Don't let it happen.

If someone's late, they are not contributing. Get it corrected, or get another rower.  I don't care how big they are or how muscular they look.

A coach in the boat for what can be seen, which is oars, and shoulders.

Pay attention to run (distance from puddle to catch).  Try to coax a few inches more, and telling us what we are doing right.

I kind of liked it when, at rest, the cox would back us near another boat, so we could splash them.

  2. things that will make me hate a coxswain:

    - doesn't steer straight

    - stays quiet

    - isn't rude

    - not deliberate

    - gets mad at the rowers for things that are his or her fault

    - makes the volume too lows or quiet

    - complains

    - says the same thing over and over again in a really annoying voice

    - says things that don't make sense

    - doesn't pay attention

    - makes you lose a race!!!!

If I were you, i would not do any of these things.

If you ever come across a coxswain names Lauren Shneider or however you spell her name, kick her in the face and tell her that everybody hates her.
