Rowing in hawaii??

I would love to get into rowing in Hawaii. I've seen the outrigger canoes on some videos or read about them a little in some travel books. I was on the crew team at Ohio University and I loved rowing...how do you get into it in Hawaii? Are there clubs you can join for fun or for competition? Is it really expensive? Is it much harder than rowing in a regatta? Thanks!

  1. by plane,it is expensive, and it is much harder than rowing in a regatta

  2. Its very different.  Legs minimally involved, possibly more hip flex power than low back pull as in sliding seat rowing. Strong arms, lats and upper back.

But your knowledge of the importance of timing will be valuable.

Races are hours long, not 2000m 6-8 minute sprints.

  3. I'm on the crew team at Ohio University too! Small world. I hope you can find a club down there!!!

  4. Outrigger canoe paddling is different then rowing, but tons of fun.  As to the previous poster who said that there are no short races, that is wrong.  There is regatta season (where most of the adult races are 1 mile, so around 10 min) and then distance season, where you get the hours long races. This is the link to the head organization of outrigger canoe racing in Hawaii http://www.hcrapaddler.com/  You can find a club close to where you will live from there.

Getting there in February is perfect timing!  The regatta (sprints) season races start in may/ june, so most teams start practicing around march, but it is good for somebody who has never paddled before to start practices for fun in February, if the team goes out paddling recreationally.  There is even a division for people who have never paddled canoe before, novice B, so you will be competing against people equal to you, and will not have to 'fight' for a seat in the boat with more experienced paddlers.

The cost for paddling is not to great.  You have to pay club dues, which vary club to club.  You might also want to buy your own paddle, which can range from $100-200 because it is nicer to have your own then borrow, and some clubs don't have paddles available to use.  Aside from that, there are no other costs.

If you have any other questions feel free to write to me!
