  1. As a rower I have also experienced losing of 6 pounds (I have 160), but only on exercices (6k) where I had to give maximum power. On ordinary exercice I lose mostly 1-1.5 pounds.

If you personaly look to lose weight, my advice to you would be to avoid it; You need to be very good mentally and phisically prepared. There are many other ways to lose weight...

  2. Rowing style excessive machines are one of the best when it comes to working out your entire body, the problem is it gets very boring using them. Most people have trouble going more than 10 minutes on one before they get bored and quit.

If you're talking about losing 5 pounds in one session, most of the weight  is going to be through water loss from sweating, once you rehydrate the weight is going to come back.  One guy I know who worked out fanatically with a rowing machine was averaging  a 7 pound weight loss per week,  he was spending a hour each day using it.
