Rowing practice?

I have my first high school rowing practice tomorrow. I was wondering what i should wear. Also, what usually happens the first practice. this is novice level, so most of us have never rowed before.

  1. Crew is probably one of the best sports you'll ever experience. I don't know where you live or what the weather is because I'm in Winter conditioning right now. It depends what you are doing. If you are lifting or running just where basketball shorts/comfortable shorts and just a regular t-shirt. If you are actually going out on the boats, try to wear something that won't get caught on the slide, so just some regular shorts, or spandex.  Also a comfortable fitting shirt.

  2. Wear something light but snug fit.

    Because there is lots of manuveuring going on with the movement of your arms (and legs if you are using sculling row boats) and possibly the wind, loose clothing might be a little hindering.

    Your best bet is a tank top and tights.

    First practice usually would go thru the drills and safety measures during a capsize,

    like how to not to hit your head on the boat when swimming to the surface, or how to get back on the boat in any event of capsize.

    so expect to get wet!

  3. As this is your first-ever practice, I doubt you'll even get in the boat. At my first practice, they went over the different terms for parts of the boat, the blades, different types of boats, and then how to row. We used rowing machines on dry land to learn the technical stuff before we even set foot in a boat.

    So if it's land training, just wear regular shorts or yoga pants and a comfortable top. Don't wear cotton because it doesn't breath very well.

    If you've already done everything above and this is your first time on the water, wear fitted pants or shorts and layers on the top. Bring extra socks as well as a change of clothes because you may go for a swim!

    I row all year round, and wear a long-sleeved biking shirt with yoga pants and a hoodie during the winter. I always end up too hot and take off the hoodie.

    Have fun! Rowing's my favourite sport easily (I've been rowing for 10 years now) and it's such a great workout. It's hard and a real challenge, which is the best part. Good luck!

  4. Shorts and a singlet or if your rowing somewhere where its really cold or early then maybe a long sleeve shirt. and spare socks! (the most important thing). The girls i used to row with used to always wear long socks but maybe that was just them.

    Theyll probably just show the around the boats and help you adjust your seats and set up your oars and things. Then theyll probably just make row around in circles teaching you to turn and stuff. If you dont capsize then you did really well :). wont be to physically demanding.
