Roxy Gap won her first graded stakes race in the Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine
Coupled with jockey Patrick Husbands, Roxy Gap, came off a perfect off the pace trip to nab her first graded stakes win in the Grade 3, $183,200 Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine race course on 22 April, 2012.
The Melnyk Racing Stables owned 4-year-old filly has only raced at Woodbine and Gulfstream Park, and in the Whimsical Stakes she was coming off a third place finish in a Gulfstream Park allowance/optional claimer race over a distance of five furlongs on
14 March, 2012, to winner Going to Kukaro, whose winning time was 54.51 seconds.
The Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes was run over the Woodbine’s synthetic surface going over a distance of six furlongs which the Mark E. Casse trained filly covered in 1 minute and 9.15 seconds, just off a second to set a new track record.
Atlantic Hurricane, who was sent off as the 8 to 5 favourite to win the race, finished third on the day as the Canada’s 2011 Sovereign Award winner as outstanding female sprinter never found her bearings on the track.
“Roxy is a very special horse for us," said Melnyk. "Watching her throughout the winter playing in the fields, we knew that if we gave her some time, and some rest, she was going to come back an absolute monster. This is just the beginning of what we hope
will be a long campaign for her."
The Canadian bred daughter of Indian Charlie, out of mare Harts Gap by Saint Ballado, Roxy Gap broke swiftly from the gate and briefly held on the lead, but then got pegged back to race in third position.
Honey Chile set the pace, as she carved fractions of 22.50 seconds for the opening quarter mile and 45.11 seconds for the half mile marker.
Atlantic Hurricane and Gerry Olguin trailed by Roxy Gap, was always close enough to make a decisive move on the three leading fillies.
She continued racing on the far outside, and entering the stretch Roxy Gap made her final bid and edged past competition to win the race by a narrow margin of a neck, as Honey Chile finished second.
