Roy Halladay achieves longest winning streak in 2011 – MLB Update
In the third game of the Interleague series against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, June 26, the Philadelphia Phillies starter Roy Halladay crushed the opposition 3-1 with his unplayable pitches to achieve his longest winning streak for his club in 2011.
With his devastating performance, the 34-year-old hurler not only achieved his eight-straight win but also took his club into their 15th series win this season. In addition, Phillies have also won in each of Halladay’s last eight starts this season.
Halladay has also achieved unique record as until now, none of the teams has received so many wins from their one starter in this season.
His eight-game winning streak is the longest for any pitcher playing for the Phillies in this season. Additionally, it is also his second longest streak during Hallady’s two-year stay in the Phillies since he joined the team in 2010 after playing for 12
years in the Toronto Blue Jays. His first streak was also of eight games in last year and the Phillies had won in each of his first six starts.
Halladay now has won ten overall games in 2011, while his record is now 10-3 with 2.40 ERA, which is also one of the lowest in the pitchers who have made 17 starts. Since he joined the team in 2010, Halladay has achieved 31-13 record with a 2.43 ERA. He
is now holding the sixth position in the list of players, who has made that many wins in their first 50 starts after changing their teams, in Major Leagues since 1950. Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Jaime Martinez is currently leading the list with 34 starts
in first 50 starts.
To achieve his mark, Halladay also threw some wobbly pitches, according to experts. However, Halladay, who made 77 strikes of 113 pitches, was not ready to take this blame as he commented.
"Having those four or five pitch innings allows you to maybe add on an inning or two at the end," said Halladay. "I didn't feel like I was scrambling. I was making pitches I wanted to make."
No one can be happier with his performance than, the Phillies’ current manager Charlie Manuel, who always boost of his successful decision. Having seen Halladay achieving exceptional record, a jubilant Manuel seemed to have unparallel support for his pitcher.
Manuel commented about him and said, "He's pretty steady.”
Phillies acquired Halladay last year on December 15 for a $60-million four-year contract. In his first game with the Phillies that he played against the Washington Nationals, he expressed his class allowing just one run on seven innings spell. Until now
he has been a major part of the Phillies bull-pen and he always has acted as per the expectations of his fans and squad.
