Roy Halladay helps Philadelphia Phillies crack eight-game losing streak – MLB News
Roy Halladay helped the Philadelphia Phillies shatter an eight-game losing-streak with a strong pitching performance on Sunday, September 25 against New York Mets at Citi Field in New York.
Halladay pitched six scoreless innings to see the Phillies prevail 9-4 in the third-game of the three-game series after having lost the day-night double header on Saturday, September 24. In what can be termed as an immaculate performance, Halladay allowed
just four hits and one walk, striking-out three batters in the process.
After having lost his previous start, Halladay resurfaced to improve his earned-run average to a career-best 2.35 and improve his tally of strike-outs to 220 this season, one more than his previous best.
The Phillies had failed to win a single game after bagging the National League East title, listing their longest losing-streak since 2000 and the worst by any Major League team after having sealed the top notch.
Commenting on his performance after the game, Halladay said, "I didn't want it to feel like a spring training start. Everything was where I wanted it to be."
Halladay expressed that Phillies are still confident of producing positive results in the post-season, even after experiencing a serious dip in form. He further added that believing is important and that is where the team is good at.
This game was different from the previous eight in the sense that manager Charlie Manuel fielded his regular line-up for the first time after being crowned division Champions. Manuel had been experimenting with various combinations for future endeavours
but things just could not work out for the team.
Aggravated after experiencing the worst losing-streak for his team, Manuel said, "I think you see the difference. When you get all of our guys in there, we've got a pretty good line-up. When you have two or three of them missing, we become a different team."
Defending his NL Cy Young Award, Halladay is highly tipped to recapture the pitching honour this season as well.
Phillies are just three games away from creating a record for most wins in a single-season. With a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves up next, it will be interesting to see if Philadelphia can bag 102 wins this season.
