Roy Halladay leaves the mound with shoulder soreness after two innings - MLB Update
An ace for the Philadelphia Phillies, Roy Halladay falls to an injury and quits the mound in the game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Two innings he threw went for plenty. He gave up a grand-slam and set the platform for a thumping defeat by his side.
As per the pitching coach Rich Dubee, he was struggling with his shoulder even before the start of the game. Based on this, one can believe that the roughing up he suffered in the first inning had resulted from an inability to power the throws properly.
Batters may have found those easier to hit and accumulated runs.
In-spite of the fact that Halladay is going through a lean period, his significance to the team is not lost on the manager, Charlie Manuel. He believes, losing Halladay in the season is a huge setback and hopes for his early return to the season.
Ever since the game against the Atlanta Braves when Halladay had arguably his worst outing of his career, his confidence has been at the lowest ebb.
His control has derailed and power has declined. One can have the feeling that he has lost faith in his ability to throw quality innings and that as a result it is taking a heavy toll on his performance from the mound.
Halladay will most probably undergo examination on Tuesday. As regard to his injury, Halladay is optimistic and does not believe it as a big concern for his prospects in the season.
"I'm hoping it's something we can just calm down quickly and get back out there," Halladay said. "It's not the point where I'm in agony throwing pitches."
The problem with Halladay is of a peculiar nature. His shoulder tightens when innings switch, which makes him rest for a while and come to the mound later. If he were to throw without breaks, he will have no issue with his shoulder, he stated.
"It's kind of that down time when it seemed to come up," Halladay said. "I think if I just went out and threw 100 straight pitches without taking a break it might be all right."
The Phillies will wish that his injury will not grow worse and just turn out to be a routine problem.
On the other hand, Halladay will love to comeback as soon as possible and help the Phillies in winning games.
