Roy Halladay shines as Philadelphia Phillies defeat San Diego Padres 5-3 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter, Roy Halladay showed his extraordinary performance with the ball as he threw his eight innings with an ERA of 2.55 and gave the Phillies a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on July 24.
The Padres posted only one run at the top of the first inning while the Phillies went ahead 2-1 by adding two runs to their individual score-card. Chase Headley singled to right-field and Cameron Maybin scored a single run. Later on, Headley moved to second
base on the throwing error of the Phillies’ fielders.
On the other side, Shane Victorino singled off centre-field and Chase Utley added a tie run for the Phillies. Ryan Howard completed a tie-breaking run when Raul Ibanez doubled off deep right-field. Victorino occupied the third base at the end of first inning.
During the second inning, the batters failed to post runs.
In the third inning, the Phillies’ batters stepped on the gas to accelerate their lead 5-1. Ibanez drove a single-run shot toward right-centre and Howard added one run. The second and third run was taken by Ibanez and Domonic Brown, respectively, when Carlos
Ruiz doubled to deep left-centre.
The Padres were able to contribute just two runs during the fourth inning to cut their deficit 5-3. Alberto Gonzalez singled towards right-centre and Kyle Blanks scored one run. The second run was taken by Kyle Phillips when Tim Stauffer hit a sacrifice
fly towards first base. Gonzalez moved to second base at the end of fourth inning.
The last five innings of the game went in the pitchers’ way as they tossed up some fastballs in right line. At the top of the sixth inning, Gonzalez was grounded out to third base, Stauffer flied out to right-field and Denorfia grounded out to second base
in search of runs.
Halladay permitted just three runs on eight hits with two earned runs and struck-out eight batters on his 116 pitches. The Padres’ batters missed some scoring opportunities in the ninth inning as Gonzalez flied out to left-field, Orlando Hudson flied out
to right-field and Chris Denorfia struck-out looking.
As a result, the Phillies took a 3-0 lead in a four-game series played at Philadelphia.
