Roy Halladay takes Philadelphia Phillies to 3-1 series win over Oakland Athletics – MLB Update
Roy Halladay tossed unplayable fastballs as the Philadelphia Phillies rebound with a 3-1 win against the Oakland Athletics at the Citizens Bank Park on Sunday, June 26.
Halladay threw unplayable fast swinging balls, allowed just one run on eight hits and took four batters over his fifth to take his club’s winning momentum back that they had lost after falling 4-1 to A’s last night. He allowed his only run in the fourth
inning to the A’s right fielder Ryan Sweeney but he made a perfect recovery to show his opponents why he still led the Major League.
After allowing this run, he did not allow batters to touch even more than once in each inning and tossed 77 strikes of 113 total pitches. It was Halladay’s eighth-straight win in 2011, which is the longest for any Phillies’ starter this season and is the
second longest during Halladay’s career with Philadelphia.
"To be able to add on, that's the important thing," Halladay said. "It's sometimes tough to pitch in a one-run game, so not always pitching with the tying run at the plate ... those extra runs make a big difference."
His manager Charlie Manuel always had golden words for him, even in bad times, as Charlie is aware of the secret Halladay employs in his starts.
"He's pretty steady," Manuel said. "If we can score three or four runs, our starting pitchers have a good chance to win the game. We scratched out three runs and he did a tremendous job."
Charlie was accurate as his batter just made three runs. Two of these runs were made in the first inning when Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard each added an RBI each off the A’s starter Josh Outman, who is still looking to cement his place a permanent starter.
However, in this game he made a strong retaliation and gave a tough time to the Phillies’ batting line-up in his later innings. He was unable to make a complete strike back and consumed another run in the fifth inning that advanced the Phillies to 3-1.
Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins played 4-for-4 game and his three runs on eight hits, two walks and only four strike-outs sent him to his second loss in just seven starts. He has achieved only three wins in this season.
Closer Brad Ziegler put in an excellent performance and allowed just two hits and one walk in the course of two innings. He also took one batter and held his ERA to 2.00 after 30 games in 2011.
Halladay played brilliantly to the Phillies over the Athletics for a series win. The Phillies came together as a team and provided valuable run support to their pitching line-up. Oakland will be looking to improve their performance in their next game.
