Roy Halladay will not be withdrawn from the season, says Charlie Manuel - MLB Update
The Philadelphia Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel backtracks from his earlier position of shutting-down Roy Halladay in the season. After the starting pitcher finished a splendid spell of innings the other day, the mindset of the management has changed immediately.
Manuel has stated that right now there is no plan relating to putting a halt to Halladay’s expedition in the season.
Halladay has been having a forgettable season so far. Apart from the first game of the season in which he started, he has floundered largely with regard to blocking batters from making big connections. While normally he is capable of retiring even the most
accomplished of the line-ups, he has struggled to outwit batters this year.
In one of the highest scoring games in the season, Halladay ended up becoming the most conspicuous scapegoat after the match. The game against the Atlanta Braves, which saw the third baseman Chipper Jones hitting two-run walk off homer, had Halladay experiencing
one of the worst outings in his career.
Following that day, his confidence never came back and whatever number of games he played afterwards witnessed Halladay leaking runs and allowing hits.
Meanwhile, he suffered an injury which resulted into a protracted outage from the season by him. He had to go through a lengthy rehab process.
Right now he has recovered completely. Part of the Phillies’ rotation now, he works to improve his win-loss record in the season.
A couple of days ago, Philadelphia’ manager Manuel hinted the possibility of removing Halladay from the season.
However as soon as Halladay shows signs that he can still help the club win games, the manager has spoken in favour of the idea of retaining him now.
“I can answer that right now,” Manuel said. “We’re not thinking about doing that. He’s not going to be shut down. Unless things vastly change, he’s definitely not gonna get shut down. If he’s gonna get his arm strong, I think pitching’s fine.”
While Manuel clarifies that Halladay will not be stopped, he does emphasise the point that in case he goes through any sort of slump down the line, he can be taken off the season.
It will be interesting to see how Halladay performs in the upcoming games.
