Roy Halladay’s pitching helps Philadelphia Phillies defeat Washington Nationals 7-3 - Part 2
The Philadelphia Phillies were successful in sweeping the Washington Nationals in the third game of the regular season series. The defeat they suffered at the hands of the Phillies marked the first series loss for the Nationals since the season began.
Washington lost 7-3 against the National League leading team.
Roy Halladay and Raul Ibanez were the stars of the show as the ace pitcher brought out his best pitching and Ibanez belted a home-run along with three RBIs.
The third inning was quite productive for the Phillies as they collectively managed to score six runs, which is quite a feat given that the Phillies are not known for their hitting abilities.
Jimmy Rollins kicked off the third inning scoring spree for the Phillies with a lead-off single. After that Shane Victorino hit a high drive which appeared to be a foul but the ball hooked several feet into fair territory.
The next run came as John Mayberry Jr. ripped a double to deep centre-field. Placido Polanco scored a single and Ryan Howard walked.
Then Raul Ibanez lined a two run double towards deep right-field which chased Lannan. Both Howards and Mayberry Jr. played tremendously and scored after that.
The last run of the third inning came as Wilson Valdez singled to centre-field and Ibanez scoring off it. By the end of the third inning, the scoreboard stood at 6-0.
The Nationals scored twice in the fourth inning, both times against Halladay. Wilson Ramos was the first one as he singled to left-field and Jayson Werth scored off it. During the play Adam LaRoche moved himself to second base. Although Ibanez made a marvellous
one hop throw home from left-field that successfully beat Werth, but he slid under Dane Sardinha, the catchers tag.
The next run came as Ian Desmond hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field, as LaRoche, once again, scored off it. Adam put in a brilliant batting performance to provide crucial runs for his team when they needed them the most.
The next run was from Philadelphia’s side as Ibanez belted out a home-run that went on for a strong 426 feet. Ibanez had a good night and was very impressive with his batting. "It's definitely freer," Ibanez said of his swing. "I'm trying to do less, trying
to stroke."
The game finished off as Werth, an ex-Philly hit a sacrifice fly towards left-field and Danny Espinosa scored off it.
It will be interesting to see how the Phillies manage to carry their winning momentum into their next series. The Nationals put in a good performance, but it was not enough to contain the Phillies brilliant pitching.
