Roy Hodgson: Fernando Torres needs support
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has said that the club must sign attacking support for striker Fernando Torres with the January transfer window looming.
However, it is understood that the new owners [headed by John W. Henry] of Liverpool have made it clear that they do not want to take any big strides in the transfer market until next summer.
"We have tried to protect Fernando as much as we can.
Unfortunately, we don't really have that luxury to make that amount of changes. I believe in David Ngog, but it is difficult to pick him in front of Fernando when he is fit," said Hodgson in national newspaper the
Times.
It is true that Torres does need some support in the Liverpool attack because there is far too much pressure on the Spaniard as it stands. However, Hodgson has to be very
careful in his relationship with the owners of the club.
A need for support
Hodgson's cry is a clear signal that he wants funds to bring in a partner for Torres up front. This would take a lot of emphasis away from the striker, which could enhance
his game.
This will also be crucial in keeping Torres at Liverpool. There have already been widely circulated rumours that he could leave the club next summer unless the right moves
are made by Liverpool in certain areas. This means bring in better quality players.
It's difficult not to sympathise with Hodgson's situation because he has to be careful in his relationship with Henry. Henry has made it clear he wants Liverpool to stabilise
as a business and releasing a few million for a player would not aid this.
"It is one of the things we really need to address in the January transfer window.
If that's the case [owners want to see the season out], we will just have to keep doing what we are doing and then make a really big effort in the summer," he added.
