Roy Hodgson critical of Liverpool's performance against Wigan Athletic
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson said he was disappointed with his team's performance after their 1–1 draw against Wigan Athletic on Wednesday 10 November.
Fernando Torres put Liverpool ahead after racing onto captain Steven Gerrard's through ball in the seventh minute, but his strike was cancelled out by Hugo Rodallega seven minutes into the next half.
After the game, Hodgson said the Torres' strike, his third in the last two games, was one of the only positives he would take from the game.
"It was a wonderful piece of play from two outstanding players. It was a marvellous pass and a wonderful finish that put us on the front foot, but we didn’t capitalise on that. I thought the longer the
game went on, even though we had a spell of play, [Wigan] were pretty much in control," the manager told reporters before blaming his side for letting Wigan back into the game.
"From the start of the second half we pretty much invited them onto us all the time, invited them to attack, we gave the ball away and as a result they took advantage of it and scored an equalising goal."
Hodgson: We did not deserve three points
Hodgson, whose team are in ninth place with 16 points after the draw, said his weary side got what they deserved after putting in a performance inferior to their game against Chelsea on Sunday 7 November.
"We didn’t deserve to win the game. I thought we looked tired today, and I don’t think our passing was anywhere near as good as we would expect it to be. We had a bright start and bright finish but for
a long period in between we weren’t anywhere near where I would expect us to be. I think we can be more than happy that we got a point from the game."
Liverpool will now travel to face Stoke City on Saturday 13 November.
