Roy Hodgson fearful of Manchester United coming for Fernando Torres
Roy Hodgson, the Liverpool manager has admitted that Manchester United may come hard looking to sign Fernando Torres, once Wayne Rooney exits Old Trafford.
Roy however insisted that the club will do all it can to hold on to their most prized possession. He added that it is not just the fear of Manchester United looking to fill the void left by Rooney, but in fact with players like
Torres there is always that fear of some big club lingering in the background for a chance.
There has been wide spread speculation all over England over who will Sir Alex choose as a replacement for Rooney. More than most have singled out one man and that is Fernando Torres.
Earlier in the summers there were rumours that the Champions Chelsea may be lining up a bid for Torres, but the Blue’s manager Carlo Ancelotti denied those claims and said that he has all he needs at the club. But now the news
of Rooney leaving Manchester United has got everyone talking and there may be a realistic chance of Torres heading to Old Trafford. A huge reason for that would have to be the poor form of Liverpool this season that has seen them have their worst start in
more than 5 decades. The Reds are currently lying in the drop zone and are in utter crisis. A player of Fernando Torres’ stature will surely love to be in a club that is at least challenging for the title, and is amongst the top 2 or 3 clubs in the country.
Since Torres’ arrival from Atletico Madrid, Liverpool has not won anything and the Spaniard has been earning accolades on international level. He has won the Euro championship and off course the World Cup with Spain. During the summers there was speculation
that he may be on his way out, but the new manager Roy Hodgson managed to convince his striker to stay. However, as mentioned the new season has not seen things improve in fact they have gone much worse.
Fernando Torres himself has also not been in great touch this season; he has managed only one goal so far and has not looked himself. The world cup winner has looked lethargic and his body language has been less than convincing
which has attracted criticism from all corners.
Liverpool manager who had admitted that Manchester United may be interested in Torres, said that for now he is not bothered and he would worry about that when the offer actually comes.
"I am pretty sure when a great player like Wayne Rooney is looking to leave his club, Manchester United will be in a position to target an awful lot of players around the world.
"I don't think Fernando Torres would be the only player they will be targeting or [we would be] the only club worried their star striker is going to be a target”. Said Hodgson
The former Fulham manager went on to say that a club like Manchester United can attract any big name in the business, and it would be hard to convince anyone otherwise. He added that he is fully aware that he will have a real fight
on his hands, but at the end of the day it will be up to Torres.
Fernando Torres missed a chunk of last season with Liverpool due to a knee injury, and recovered in time to go to the world cup with Spain. He was handed starts in first 3 games by the manager, but after less than impressive performances
he was relegated to the bench. In the final just before the final whistle he pulled up due to a hamstring injury and since then has been struggling to get back to his 100%.
