Roy Hodgson hails Liverpool's win and Fernando Torres
Liverpool finally got a win under their belt after a series of defeats and goalless draws. The Reds still linger in the drop zone but a win will none the less give them much needed boost.
Apart from the win another great thing for Liverpool was that their ace marksman Fernando Torres was back scoring goals. Manager Roy Hodgson who has been under fire recently was very happy with the result, and said that this win would
go a long way towards reviving the season for Liverpool. The manager was also extremely pleased with the performance of Fernando Torres, and said that Fernando is quickly getting back to his best.
The world cup winning Spanish striker knocked in only his 2nd goal of the season, but more importantly it was the winner. Liverpool have been going through a torturous time but Fernando Torres individually has also
been taking a lot of sticks from all corners for his lack of form, along with sluggish body language this season. Hodgson said that unwanted criticism and the weight of immense expectation is what has been hampering Torres, but he seems to be coming back in
his groove which is an excellent sign for the club.
"Fernando played well today, an awful lot better. In my opinion that was his best performance for the team this season," said the Liverpool manager.
"It is very nice when you have had a good performance and caused as many problems as he did and looked as likely to score as he did on so many occasions that he actually got one and put it in the back of the net”.
The former Fulham manager said that Fernando looked happy and relieved after the match, and that is exactly what the team needs. He added that if a player does not have baggage on his head it is easier for him to play, rather than having
him worry for other off the pitch issues. Hodgson said that the team really needs Torres and other key players to raise their game if they are to make anything of this season.
The manager went on to say that when Fernando came back from the world cup, he was physically not fit and mentally fatigued. After that when he played everyone started questioning his form and also his commitment to the club. Hodgson who
took over in the summer after Rafael Benitez’s exit said that he never had any doubts about his ace striker, and always gave him his full support. He insisted that nothing has changed for him and he would continue to put his weight behind Torres.
The manager reiterated that every player needs to be enjoying the game to play well, and Torres finally looks like he is enjoying being on the pitch.
The manager also commended his captain Steven Gerrard, Hodgson said that in his career he has never seen a player who can take so much pressure from the fans and the press all on his own shoulders and still be able to perform. Liverpool
boss said that Gerrard is a rare breed and there can never be anyone else like him. He said that Steven Gerrard has been the rock around which he has built his team, and he would remain as the most important player for Liverpool in their bid to get back in
the league where they belong.
Liverpool have encountered their worst start to the season in more than 5 decades, and after 9 games they are still in bottom 3. But one good thing for them that has happened his season is that the American owners Tom Hicks and George
Gillette are now gone. The fans and the management are now optimistic that there is a whole new chapter for the club about to begin, and this season may just be damage limitation. But everyone involved with the club is confident that in the bigger scheme of
things the club is heading in the right direction.
