The England national team coach says that the Manchester United striker did his best to make up for the first two matches that he missed at the start of the European Championships and that any criticism that has been levelled
at him is unfair...
Hodgson has come out and made it clear that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 worked very hard to make up for the first two matches that he missed in the European Championships due to a ban imposed him on by UEFA. Rooney was given a two match ban for
getting a red card in England’s last EURO 2012 qualifying encounter against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 but then went onto win against Sweden and Ukraine to set up a quarterfinal clash against Italy.
England failed to impress against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 as soon as he was available
for selection which was after the clash against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sweden-c3015.
Against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032, the Manchester United striker did score an easy headed goal but he was inspirational as many expected him to be. In the quarterfinal against Italy, Rooney failed to live up to the English fans’ expectations as
he was out of form for yet another big match at the international stage.
Hodgson said in his latest comments, "His (Rooney's) attitude was magnificent. He was putting in extra work because he was concerned he was behind the others having missed the first two games through suspension. His desire to do
well was enormous and we were trying to put the brakes on.”
He further added, "In the final game he, along with one or two other players, didn't play to the level he can but that's what football is about. If every player was a robot and played at the same level in every game then football
would be very simple and we wouldn't need coaches."
There have been calls to drop Rooney from the international setup in favour of trying a different offensive combination up front for England. But it looks unlikely at the moment that Roy will take such a drastic step especially
in the aftermath of England’s knockout from the European Championships.
