Roy Hodgson still favourite to be appointed Liverpool FC manager
Liverpool FC are close to appointing Roy Hodgson as their new manager, according to several unconfirmed reports.
The Fulham boss flew home from the World Cup in South Africa today, with the odds on him replacing Rafael Benitez in the Anfield hotseat shortening all the time, and the Daily Mirror newspaper even claiming that the Reds are aiming to unveil him by July 1st, a week today.
Ex-Real Madrid boss Manuel Pellegrini, Galatasaray’s Frank Rijkaard and former Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish – who was helping conduct the search for a new boss – have all been linked to the position, but Hodgson has now moved ahead of all three in the running.
The Reds have been without a manager for three weeks, and an appointment of the 62-year-old Hodgson – who guided Fulham to the Europa League final last season – would stabilise a club who are still up for sale and awaiting fresh investment.
Also contrary to earlier reports, it is now being claimed that Hodgson’s arrival would not signal the resignation of Dalglish from his role as club ambassador.
It had been claimed that Dalglish would leave the club entirely if he was not appointed as boss, but that is now being denied, with his friendship with Hodgson and love for the club cited as the main reasons why he would choose to stay.
One Liverpool FC-related website has even gone as far as to claim that Hodgson has already been appointed, but it is safe to assume that that is not the case.
