‘Roy Hodgson talking about things he doesn't know’ - Rafael Benitez on ‘expensive failures’
Last week, Roy Hodgson talked about the ‘expensive failures’ of Rafael Benitez era. He also mentioned the lack of communication and participation of Kenny Dalglish during the previous regime.
Speaking to the media ahead of Inter Milan’s match with Tottenham Hotspur, Rafael Benitez replied, “He's talking about things that he doesn't know." And carrying it on from his previous rant about a bottle of milk, Benitez added, "Some people cannot see
a priest on a mountain of sugar."
Inter Milan take on Spurs at White Hart Lane on Tuesday night in their Group A Champions League encounter. Inter survived a late scare in the shape of Gareth Bale at San Siro last week. Benitez will be well aware of the threat posed by the Welshman in the
return match.
Benitez talked about former Liverpool owners, George Gillet and Tom Hicks, and criticised them for taking the club downhill. His criticism was also directed towards former Managing Director Christian Purslow.
However, the general saying that a week is too long a time in football, did not apply to Rafael Benitez as he continued to lash out on pupil from his former club.
“I think that Mr Hodgson, he doesn't understand. Every single press conference is even worse than the last one. He's talking about things that he doesn't know. And some people cannot see a priest on a mountain of sugar. Maybe, he hasn't been in Liverpool
too long. We gave the fans their pride - again. We fought for the fans, we fought for the club and we fought for our players. So, maybe he cannot understand this.”
Benitez was referring to Roy Hodgson’s comments regarding wasteful spending, and explained that he only had a net spending of £10m. He insisted that he left the club in a healthy position as a club worth £300m and with a total of 13 Internationals in the
squad cannot be considered to be in complete turmoil.
He advised Roy Hodgson to concentrate on his job rather than slating the previous regime for his own undoing. He stated, "So, instead of talking about flips and flops, he has to concentrate on his job, try to do his best and not talk about the level of his
players or the new players. Concentrate, try to do your best because it will be the best for the club and it will be the best for the fans."
Roy reportedly accused Rafael Benitez of banning Kenny Dalglish from Liverpool’s Melwood training ground. Rafa also responded to these accusations, saying, "I brought back Kenny Dalglish to do a role in the club and Christian Purslow gave him another role."
Rafael Benitez has kept a close eye on what’s happening at his old club. He is aware of the developments taking place there and ever since his move to Inter Milan; he has had something to say about Liverpool in most of his press conferences.
Inter Milan will be without their goalkeeper Julio Cesar as well as midfielder Esteban Cambiasso after the duo picked thigh strains during their weekend clash with Genoa.
Benitez has been criticised for his training methods which have resulted in a few muscle related injuries. However, he was adamant that it wasn’t his training methods that were causing these injuries as the players trained 80% of the time with the ball.
He pointed to Inter's run to the Champions League final and the Italian cup final, which meant that the Italian champions played a lot of games. This was followed by the World cup and so, Inter players had little recovery time.
