Roy Jones Junior all set to take on Dawid Kostecki in a non-title 10-round showdown – Boxing News
Roy Jones Junior, the former WBO NABO light heavyweight champion, will take on the highly talented Polish proud Dawid Kostecki, the current WBC Baltic and WBA Inter-Continental light heavyweight champion, in a 10-round non-title bout which will be held on
June 30, 2012.
The bout is somewhat being dubbed as a ‘clash between titans of past and present’ since Roy himself is a legend who has emphatically ruled the division in his era and has grabbed almost all the significant divisional titles.
On the other hand, is the Polish surging proud who idolises just one man Roy and has followed his footstep to generate a pretty intimidating and impressive resume of 39 wins in 40 bouts.
In a recent press conference Dawid shared his sheer respect for Roy and commented, “Roy was always my idol, the only fighter I loved to watch. But it was then, now is my time to beat my hero and take his place.”
Roy, 43, recently put forth the media his thoughts about Dawid’s press conference and commented that he is ready for the showdown and will not easily give the bout to Dawid adding that he will analyse as to how good a student Kostecki is.
Jones has been in a huge 63 bouts and boasts 55 wins. He has nailed a whopping 40 men by knockout and recently broke his three-bout lose streak by nailing Max Alexander and by grabbing the vacant Universal Boxing Organization Intercontinental Cruiserweight
title.
It is true that Roy has lost three of his last five bouts but still he is considered as one of those legendary pugilists who held and defended the apex divisional titles for a pretty long time. In addition, Roy started his career in 1989 and since then till
2003 his resume exhibited just one loss to Antonio Tarver.
While discussing Dawid’s potential, Roy stated, “I checked out a bunch of his fights, and know what he can and cannot do. He’s tough, wants to go punch for punch and I like his attitude in the ring. There is a reason why he is so highly ranked but I’m planning
on rewriting those rankings a little on June 30.”
Dawid, also known as the ‘Gypsy’, will definitely face the toughest test of his career and if he emerges victorious there will be theoretically no one in the division with the capability and calibre to nail the Polish pounder.
At the same time, if Roy rises at the occasion, he will permanently silence his critics for good who had been advising him to hang his gloves but still the odds of Jones winning the bout are bit hazy due to factors such as age, agility, footwork, resilience
etc.
