Roy Jones: Mayweather does not need to face Manny to cement his legacy – Boxing News
Living legend Roy Jones believes Mayweather does not need to face Manny Pacquiao in order to cement his legacy. Jones, who is scheduled to face Dawid Kostecki on June 30 in Poland, believes Manny Pacquiao still has score to settle with Juan Manuel Marquez,
which makes him ineligible of reaching a fighter like Mayweather.
In his recent interview, Jones said, “Pacquiao still hasn’t truthfully settled the score with Juan Manuel Marquez. So how can you say Floyd needs this guy who has an open book with another guy still to cement his legacy?”
It should be noted here that Manny Pacquiao has taken on Marquez thrice. Their first bout ended in a tie, the second and third were won by Pacquiao. Pacquiao grabbed a unanimous decision win over Marquez in their second bout and he grabbed a major points
decision win in their third encounter. However, the third fight saw Marquez better than ever. Marquez took the fight to the twelfth round. Pacquiao found it hard to counter Marquez’s attack, however he did manage to survive. After the show, many analysts were
of the view that Marquez deserves another rematch since he was close to victory.
Last month, Marquez demanded another match from Manny Pacquiao but Pacquiao’s camp rejected the call. Earlier this week, Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach said that Pacquiao and Marquez are done for good. According to Roach, both the fighters know each so
well that their fight now will be boring and without a point.
Manny Pacquiao is currently in Los Angeles training for his fight against Timothy Bradley at Roach’s Wild Card Gym. Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley will go head to head on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title will be on the
line whereas Bradley will bring his undefeated streak to the ring.
For now, Pacquiao’s camp has shown no signs of interest in fighting Marquez again. However, there are chances that the match might happen since Pacquiao does not have a lot of choices left when it comes to his future opponents. If not Mayweather, then Marquez
might be Pacquiao’s next target.
