Roy Nelson unhappy about being dropped from UFC 125 card
This time last week, Roy “Big Country” Nelson was slated to fight Shane Carwin in the co-main event at Ultimate Fighting Championship event 125. Today he is no longer listed on the fight
card and he is not happy about the UFC’s decision to drop him from the event.
Nelson voiced his displeasure about being pulled to Sherdog.com.
“This is one of the biggest cards of the year, and I was in the co-main event, and I was really trying to make sure my knee was better. The UFC really pushed me hard to get through with
my rehab so I could fight on this card,” fumed Nelson.
Nelson underwent surgery on his knee in August to repair a ligament tear he suffered in his loss to Junior dos Santos. Nelson said he rushed his recovery to be ready for the card.
“My doctors said I shouldn’t fight again until February or March, but I stepped up because the UFC wanted me to. I stepped up for the UFC, and I hoped they would do the same for me,” said
Nelson.
Nelson’s problems began last week when Carwin removed himself from the card. Carwin wrote on his website,: "If the doctors do not have to perform surgery, then I will be out eight to 12
weeks. If they do have to perform surgery, I do not know how long I will be out of action.”
The UFC often deals with the issue of fighters pulling out of fights and most of the time they find a replacement to step in. With UFC 125 not being held until 1 January there was ample
time to find a replacement for Carwin.
Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic expressed interest in fighting Nelson after Carwin announced his withdrawal instead. In the end, no replacement was offered and Nelson was dropped from the card.
The new co-main event on the card is going to be the first ever UFC featherweight title match between Jose Aldo and Josh Grispi.
