  1. Most of the records of the 6-7 million Britons who served in the ranks during the  Great War were destroyed by German bombing in 1940. Some 2 million records were salvaged or preserved because they had been housed at the pension office. The Campaign Medal Rolls, which include some cursory details about most (~5 million) veterans, also survive.

The more information you have available, the easier you will find it to be to locate your grandfather's records. Key identifying facts include the year and place of his birth, the unit with which he served, the dates of his service, and his exact name. You might begin by verifying the information that you've posted. Did he serve in more than one unit? Only the 7th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment saw service at Gallipoli - and it was one of just two battalions that never saw service in France. But if he served in the Royal Field Artillery your information may make more sense, and there are four Albert Goodmans listed in the Medal Card index who served in the RFA.

Once you have your information in order, you can journey to the National Archives to look at the physical records. You'll probably find it easier, though, to look this up via ancestry.co.uk, which has digitized most of the records. Most research libraries have subscriptions, or you can sign up for a free two-week trial subscription on the site.

    Good luck!

Unfortunately 60% of the records were destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1940, you may have some luck with the gunner’s museum although they do not hold personnel records if you can identify the actual troop he served with, you might be able to follow their deployments.

Because he served beyond the First World War his records might be in Glasgow
