Royal Challengers Bangalore v Deccan Chargers – Indian Premier League 5 – Match Recap – Challengers steal close 5-wicket victory from Chargers
A game-changing 18th over by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AB-de-Villiers-c887 enabled the Royal Challengers Bangalore to steal a 5-wicket victory from the Deccan Chargers at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on May 6.
The home team won the toss, and stand-in skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/S-Dhawan-c2392 (who scored an unbeaten 73) establishing an 86-run partnership. The
stand came to an end when some confused running led to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harris-c61739 being run out in the 12th over.
He was followed to the crease by Cameron White, who made a sizeable individual contribution of 45 off 24, in addition to joining Dhawan for an 82-run stand which got their side up to 168 by the last over. White was sent back to the pavilion, caught and bowled
by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779, who hit a six and a four off the last few deliveries, getting his side up to 181 by the end of 20 overs, at the expense of 2 wickets.
The 182-run chase appeared more than achievable for the Challengers’ formidable batting line-up, and openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221 (26) were successful in providing their side a steady foundation in the form of a 91-run partnership. Anand
Rajan intervened to break it up in the 11th over, and Gayle was clean bowled, making way for Virat Kohli.
The Chargers’ bowlers appeared to be on a roll at this point, and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/A-Mishra-c871 went on to claim two wickets in quick succession in the 14th over – Kohli was dismissed on 9 and Asad Pathan (4) followed suit four deliveries later. By this point,
the Challengers were at 106, and 76 runs short of the target – a precarious position.
However, the Chargers’ sudden burst of ambition came to an end with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Allan-Robert-Border-c43726 de Villiers’ innings. The rampaging Proteas batsman cut the opposition’s bowling attack down to size with a seemingly impossible 47 off 17.
By the 16th over, the asking rate had climbed to 14, and Dilshan’s dismissal at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mayank-Agarwal-c1937 managed a valiant 18 off 6 deliveries, but his efforts still left a lot to
be desired and he was dismissed in the 17th over, leaving de Villiers and Syed Mohammad (4) to deal with the challenge of 39 runs required from 18 balls.
The Chargers’ looked to be in a comfortable position, but the 18th over saw de Villiers treating http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DW-Steyn-c1409 with astonishing belligerence – 23 runs, including 4 boundaries, enabled the Proteas batsman to turn what had appeared to be a lost game
around in his team’s favour.
The Challengers’ required 16 further runs off two overs, but the batsmen wrapped it up in one – a single, three boundaries by de Villiers, and one by Syed Mohammad got the hosts to 185 with 7 balls and 5 wickets remaining.
De Villiers onslaught had left the Chargers’ bowlers reeling, and economy rates soared. While Mishra managed to register respectable figures (4-0-28-2 with an economy rate of 7.00), the remaining bowlers proved to be fairly expensive. Rajan conceded 44 in
just 3.5 overs for a single wicket, while Pratap Singh bled 34 in 3 overs. Steyn, the force behind the Chargers’ bowling attack, was unable to claim a single wicket, and was forced to give away 30 in 3 overs, largely owing to the devastating 18th
over.
De Villiers was awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding cameo, and the Challengers made it up to the fifth spot on the tournament points table, while the Chargers continued their time at the bottom.
The Challengers have an upcoming chance to break into the top four as they prepare to battle it out against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833 on May 8.
