Royal Defence to stamp for a third time at Brighton through the Brightoncarbootsale.Co.UK Handicap
Brighton will host the Class 6 Brightoncarbootsale.Co.UK Handicap over a mile, one furlong and 209 yards on Thursday, 26th April. Taking part in the £1,617 purse event is a line-up of fifteen runners who are four-year and older.
The only entry to have raced at Brighton is Royal Defence, Refuse To Bend’s six-year-old bay gelding out of mare, Alessia. He has raced there thrice during the previous season and has bagged two of the races.
Royal Defence won the David Ashforth Brighton Rock Winner Handicap on 28th June, 2011 over a mile and two furlongs. Paired up with jockey Pat Cosgrave for the race, the six-year-old led the runner up of the race, Excellent Vision, by 3 ¼ lengths.
Finishing third behind the winner was Corlough Mountain while the 4/1 favourite, Major Eradicator, ended eighth on the line-up of eleven.
His very next start was at Brighton again but this time the chance could not be transformed into a victory.
Royal Defence, the 11/4 favourite of the Blakes Butcher Handicap on 12th July at Brighton over a mile and two furlongs, crossed the wire after the winner and the runner up.
The title was conquered by Come On The Irons who took charge of the final ¾ of the length and was being closely pursued by Professor John.
This time the partnership with Pat Cosgrave did not prove to be as effective as before. However he did not let the ranking at the race course get driven down from the third position.
Till yet his final try at Brighton was in the Percy Cunliffe Handicap on 12th September over a mile and four furlongs. He had to snatch away the victory from the runner up, Rowan Ridge, who was reeling in for the wire just half a length away.
The winner was riding with Sean Levey.
The 5/2 favourite of the race, Drumadoon, finished third behind the winner.
Royal Defence has already raced his seasonal debut at Yarmouth in the Norfolk Racing Club/M.D. Thompson Electrical Handicap on 10th April over a mile and three and a half furlongs. He could only manage the sixth position after the winner, Colinca’s
Lad.
Today he has the chance to strike a third victory at Brighton.
