Royal Delta all set to compete in the Delaware Handicap on 21st July, 2012
The Bill Mott trained, Royal Delta, looks in particularly good shape, and it seems like the next stop for her is the Grade 2 $750,000, Delaware Handicap on 21stJuly, 2012, which is scheduled to take place at Delaware Park.
The daughter of Empire Maker has demonstrated superior racing ability in her previous start at Churchill Downs, where she conquered the 1 1/8 mile track in the Grade 2 Fleur De Lis Stakes, where she prevailed by a massive margin of eight lengths over
the Dale Romans trained, Afleeting Lady.
To run over a distance of 1 ¼ miles, the Kentucky bred runner, who is foaled by Delta Princess, is being taken on practice runs and work-outs to enhance her form and strength for the future races to come.
Bill Mott is slightly concerned about her form but everything seems under control.
Bill Mott emphasised that the well-being of the runner was very important, he also stated: “She seems to be fine. She ran awfully big last time and we want to make sure everything’s in good order before we run, but it seems to be.”
Owned by the Besilu Stables, the runner’s work-outs showed progress, as she completed a distance of five furlongs in an impressive time of 1 minute and 01.75 seconds at Belmont Park on 9th July, 2012.
Paired with exercise jockey Rodolphe Brisset, the four-year-old completed the first three furlongs in 37.95 seconds, and the remaining two in 23.70 seconds.
This performance gave her connections an extra boost of confidence, and trainer Bill Mott seemed satisfied but stated that the attempt was actually to slow her down so that she maintains her composure throughout the race.
To the press, he stated:
“It was nice and smooth and I was happy that it wasn’t quite as fast as she’d been breezing.”
Mott further commented: “She’s obviously fit now – she’s had a race – I don’t think she needs to be going in 59 [seconds}. We’ve been working trying to slow her down actually.”
The older division runner has claimed six victories in her career, and will be aiming for the seventh one at Delaware.
