Royal Delta’s cut to the hip will not stop her from defending her Ladies’ Classic title
Besilu Stables’ 4-year-old filly, Royal Delta sustained a cut on her right hip, while entering her stall on the plane during her flight to Southern California for the 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, where she will vie for another victory in two years
in the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Santa Anita Park on 2 November, 2012.
Trainer Bill Mott said on 30 October, 2012, that the cut Royal Delta had sustained on her hip is only superficial, and will not affect her chances of running in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic on 2 November.
The daughter of Empire Maker last year won the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, and went on to win the Eclipse Award for the champion 3-year-old filly.
"She's good," Mott said. "The site that was sutured looked really good. If it stays the way it is right now, it will be a non-issue as far as her performance. There are a lot of things that can happen to horses that we can't see that are a lot worse than
that. This is just a layer of skin that got sewn back. That's it."
"I think she is doing very well," the trainer said. "She is healthy. She is sound. She feels good. She has been working great."
Bill Mott was sure of Royal Delta’s start to defend her title at Santa Anita Park this time around. Bred in Kentucky by Palides Investments, Royal Delta this year has gone on to secure three races in six starts.
She is currently exiting victory in the Grade 1 Beldame Invitational at Belmont Park on 29 September, 2012, where she was able to down a rampant, It’s Tricky in second to post her third victory of the season, while covering the 1 1/8 mile distance in 1 minute
and 48.80 seconds.
Her other two victories were in Grade 2 events, the Fleur De Lis Stakes and the Delaware Handicap, and the most prominent thing about these two victories was Royal Delta’s ability to bounce back from a 9th place finish in the Group 1 Dubai World
Cup at the Meydan earlier this year.
