  1. In the UK, the top of the line is the King or Queen, whose children are all given the honorary title of Prince.  The heir apparent is given the specific courtesy title of 'Prince of Wales', and his children are typically styled 'Prince x*x of Wales', although "The Prince of Wales" always refers to the heir apparent.

Currently, the Queen's consort is Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.  This is not a courtesy title or one he was born into, but rather one granted to him by Elizabeth's father, George VI.  A King's spouse, by contrast, is usually known simply as the Queen Consort, and a former Queen Consort is known as the Queen Mother, or Queen Mum for short (there is no protocol established for addressing the male spouse of a Queen, however, so it will be interesting to see how Prince Philip is addressed if Queen Elizabeth predeceases him).

The second son of the monarch is usually titled The Duke of York, but this is by an accident of history: since the 15th century, not one of the title holders has produced male issue capable of inheriting it (a tradition which Prince Andrew proudly carries on to this day).

Note that the Dukes of York and Edinburgh are Dukes by possession of a title, but in both cases the monarch has issued them (as well as their children, and in many cases the children of the monarch's siblings) letters patent which allow them the use of the title 'Prince', for their personal use, although the title will not be inherited by default by their children.

All the extended family members of the monarch tend to have titles, like the Viscount of Cornwall, since there is a great deal of inbreeding within the nobility.

  2. The term "royal family" does not have a legal meaning. The term "royal" does have legal meaning. For instance Philip and Zara are the first two grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth, but they are not royals.

It has to do with inheritance from a monarch through a male lineage, or the marriage of a woman to a prince (not the marriage of a man to a princess).

= The phrases HRH and TRH (His or Her Royal Highness) and (Their Royal Highness) are governed by the same rules as "prince or princess". If you are a prince or a princess you are also HRH.

    ----------------------------------

Currently, in addition to HRM (Her Royal Majesty the Queen) their are 20 people who are entitled to use HRH (or Prince or Princess).

    - 1 husband of the queen

    - 4 children to the queen (male and female)

    - 6 grandchildren to the queen (out of 8) via her sons

    - 2 current spouses to the SONS of the queen (Camilla and Sofia). Divorced spouses of sons, and the husband(s) of the Princess Royal are not royal

    - 4 cousins to the queen (children of her uncles)

    - 3 spouses to those 4 cousins (one cousin is a widow).

    -------------------------

The cousins are royal because they are descendents of the Queen's grandfather, King George V

    -------------------------

Before she died Princess Margaret (the queen's sister) was a royal, but none of her descendents are royal.

    -------------------------

It is rumoured that when Charles becomes King, he may not keep up the same arrangements with the queens three male cousins who all have virtually free apartments in Kensington Palace. Prince Richard, is only four years older than Charles.

    - Prince Edward, Duke of Kent (age 72.9)

    - Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester (age 64.0 )

    - Prince Michael of Kent (age 66.2)

The final cousin of the queen

    - Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy (age 71.7) recently signed a 150 year lease on her home in the middle of Richmond Park.

    ----------------------------

I believe that if Prince William has children while Queen Elizabeth is still alive they will be princes and princesses. If Prince Harry has children they will not be prince and princess until Charles becomes King. If Queen Elizabeth outlives her son, Prince Harry's children will never become royal (since they will not be grandchildren of a monarch).

    ----------------------------

The husbands of Princess Beatrice and Eugenie will not be royal or will they be called Princes. Their children will not be royal except in the extremely unlikely event of a mass tragedy that makes one of them the monarch.

  3. Royals are members of the reigning monarchical family.

Kings and Queens Regnant, and Queens Consorts(wives of the reigning king) are titled "Your Majesty."

Sons and daughters of the king and queen are royal princes and princes. The offspring of the monarch can also bear other royal versions of peerage titles, like duke/duchess,marquess/marchioness,

    earl/countess, and the like.Sons

and daughters of a royal prince are

prince/princess too.Royal titles are inherited through the father's line,so all sons of a king or royal prince pass on their titles to their children,so aunts, uncles, cousins who have a prince for a father have that title as well.

If you look at the family of Elizabeth II you can get a good picture of titles.

We'll start with Elizabeth's mother and father,King George VI and Queen Consort Elizabeth.Their Majesties had two daughters:Her Royal Highness,Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary and Her Royal Highness,Princess Margaret Rose(children of kings and queens are princes and princesses).

When Princess Elizabeth married, she married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark(and her third cousin).

Their children are all princes and princess because both parents are royal prince and princess.Philip became a naturalized British citizen, but was re-titled with United Kingdom princely and ducal titles.Since titles pass through the paternal side,he passed the royal titles to his daughters.

Elizabeth II's cousins are royal princes, royal dukes, His Royal Highness Prince Richard,The Duke of Gloucester,His Royal Highness,Prince Edward,The Duke of Kent,His Royal Highness,Prince Michael of Kent, and Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra. They are the children of sons of King George V.
