  1. The country has to have a head of state.  if we did not have th eQueen we would have an elected president.  And that would mean yet more boring elections.  I'd sooner have the Queen.

And it doesn't cost any more to maintain the royal family than it would do to maintain an elcted head of state.

I do respect the Queen, because i think she does a good job, she carries out her duties conscientiously, and always keeps her cool.

  2. I don't see any point in them because you can't polish a t**d.

  3. What is there to respect? They are a dysfunctional bunch of inbred, loathsome creeps. When they give back what their forebears stole (land, churches, property etc) there might be something to respect but I suspect h**l will freeze over first.

Sack the whole miserable bunch and let's save a fortune!

  4. The Queen and her family have contributed their dedication, time and effort in representing their country and carrying out royal duties 24/7. The term "retirement" does not apply to the Queen, she has to do her job until the day she dies.

In addition to a monarch's constitutional duties, the monarch has an important role to play in public. A national figurehead, the monarch provides a focus for identity, offers recognition of achievement of all kinds, and supports the ideals of public and charitable work.

The monarch acts a focus for national unity and pride by means of regular visits in its country, its other realms, and overseas destinations. The monarch is supported by other members of the Royal Family, who also carry out thousands of visits each year.

The monarch recognizes excellence and achievement. This takes place in many ways: through Royal visits which provide a 'seal of approval' to a charity or community; through the award of honours and prizes to outstanding individuals; and through messages sent to those celebrating special birthdays or wedding anniversaries.

The monarch and the Royal Family also play an important part in the public and voluntary sector. Through involvement with hundreds of charities, military units and other organizations, they promote the ideal of service to others.

  5. The Queen has done more for Great Britain than all the Prime Ministers put together by putingt the UK on the map, bring in tourists and promote industry to the rest of the numskulls on the planet. Every ruler on Earth respects our Queen (with the odd exeption). If you fancy a president instead, then please feel free to leave the UK and go and live under Georgie boy in the US. You are free to leave, this is a FREE country.

  6. The point is to respect the ancient traditions and cultural heritage entiwined within this institution. It is very much part of what it means to be british.

As for respect,I dont have any particular respect for any Royals other than Her Majesty the Queen. She has never put a foot wrong during a lengthy reign.

  7. I respect everyone, but I don't know of any other country which has a monarchy and a government and for that reason, I do not believe that we should have both.  They are out of touch with reality, cost a fortune in taxes and when there are people living in poverty - or dieing of starvation, regardless of where they live in the world - I do not believe that the expense can be justified.

  8. Well Ay say, Guillotine hers. The French had the right Idea.

  9. I respect them, and I'm envious that we are not part of the Commonwealth. You are blessed to have a Queen such as Elizabeth.

By the way, Mel was born in upstate New York (the US), moved to Australia when he was 12, then came back. I'm not sure what the state of his driver's license is now, but perhaps he's pedaling back and forth on a bicycle now. At least he did for 90 days.

  10. In England we have the royal family, love them or hate them they have a great history, and I respect them for that.

Unlike Scottish leaders who were on the payroll of English royalty until a man called Mel Gibson came along, and he was American.

  11. The Queen is the true ruler of the UK and some territories. Don't be fooled by the idiot politics you see every four years. The queen never changed did she?

  12. There is no point to the royal family, they have no power and no purpose. After Charles was beheaded there was no king but they brought one back so the rich and privileged could take control of the land when the people of England decided to take land for themselves after the civil war. There is no good excuses, France got rid of there royalty and they are no better or worse of for it than us having one. It's time they went as far as I am concerned. And I dont understand why anyone should respect them, what have they done that anyone else could have done. They are people like you and me, they have two arms, two legs, two eye's and their **** stinks just like mine.

  13. The reason routinely given for keeping a constitutional monarchy is that the monarch performs the ceremonial duties of a chief executive while serving as a unifying force for the entire nation (or in the United Kingdom, the federation of nation states).  Speaking of which, in the United States, the President, whatever his or her party affiliation, has to take time out to pardon the turkey before Thanksgiving and light the White House Christmas tree.

Most Americans who are dissatisfied with a particular President say that they still respect the Office.  Similarly, as an American of Scottish and English descent, I respect the institution of Monarchy, even though the actions of some members of the Royal Family have been less than honorable. As for the Queen, herself, I admire any 81-year-old who can still function (I am taking care of my 82-year old mother who has Alzheimer's), so my admiration for the Queen daily increases.

The case could perhaps be made for streamlining the British monarchy and making it more like the bicycle monarchies of the Netherlands and Denmark, Sweden, and Norway (metaphorically speaking).   This would keep the tourist business happy in London, although visitors would still tour the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey even if England became a republic.  After all, Versailles is still a major French tourist attraction.

    BTW,

---Mel Gibson, like Nicole Kidman and Olivia Newton-John,  is Australian.*  To Americans, his accent sounds distinctly Australian, even though he lives in the US.

---Percentage wise, more Scots serve in the British armed forces than do English.  These statistics have held certainly since World War I and probably much earlier. [Some of my maternal ancestors immigrated from Glasgow during the Napoleonic period because they thought they were going to be drafted.]

---England gets a cut of Scotland's North Sea oil.

    ------

*Yes, most Americans know that Mel was born in up-state New York, but press releases have labelled him as Australian since the days of Mad Max.  Wikipedia lists him as an American-Australian actor.

  14. The point of the the Royal family is to act as a unifying force.I know, they haven't done a very good job of it,over the past twenty years or so.Never the less, they are great ambassadors for this country.Just being who they are will open more doors to them in a day, than yours could in a lifetime.I am dead set against the hangers-on but, that is part and parcel of the whole. How much cheaper would it be to have a president?A president has to be kept, fed, cleaned and protected just the same with the drawback of having to go through the election process every four years.Do I respect the Queen?Yes,I do,she works very hard even at the age of eighty, she works harder than most other people of her age do and if you think it is easy,to attend two or three official functions a day,be friendly and keep smiling, even though you may hate it.you are very much mistaken.

Evie S.Somehow I can't see the Queen,at 80 years old turning up at an official function on a bicycle, one hand on the handlebar and the other trying to keep her crown on.Yes,I think you've guessed it,it is my pathetic attempt at humour again.

  15. i personally think the leader of any country should be a president that way any one can become the head of state.

The royal family is an out dated tradition that has out lived its usefulness.

They own land that was robbed off the people of this country

they do nothing and for that they get well paid.

The queens two grandchildren wills and harry are pretend soldiers and are only playing at it.

Do you think a private would be able to go out every night clubbing it???

To have rows with the press??and have to be carried out of night clubs drunk??

The retinue ,all the hangers on,the minor royals that do nothing but live of their titles and we pay for that.

We should get rid of the lot and start afresh

  16. Most countries only have a constitutional monarch however Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and Jordan still have absolute monarchies. I live in the United States so I don't know what it is like to live under royal rule but I respect the countries that still have them

  17. The Queen does not live off our taxes, She pays tax! and how would like to do a job where you are on show 24 Hours a day and HAVE TO ENTERTAIN people you either do not like OR have no interest in! I bet your life does not revolve trying to be friendly with everyone you meet. Personally I would not like her job mainly because I know I can take an instant dislike to someone and not be able to speak to them never mind being pleasant.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So stop griping and have some RESPECT!!!!
