Royal Melbourne set to stage Women's Australian Open this week
Royal Melbourne is in the headlines once again as there is much to pay attention to its greens and a string of tricky holes.
The course is going to see several players proving their worth in the Women’s Australian Open slated to begin this week.
Described as the pinnacle of golf in Australia, Royal Melbourne has long been a favourite course for most players.
However, due to a number of difficult holes, it is being expected that players will not find it easy to make too many good putts.
Sharing his thoughts about the course, Director of the Women’s Australian Open, Trevor Herden said that he did not think that the players will be at much ease when they enter the course this week.
He tried to prove his point by saying that most of the players gearing up to participate in the tournament did not have considerable experience with the Royal Melbourne.
The field set for the Open is strong indeed but there are a number of players who will be playing at the course for the first time ever. This is what has made the Royal Melbourne a hot spot for some.
Herden stated that putting will not be easy, as there are a few holes that may turn tricky for average players.
Shedding some light on the greens of Royal Melbourne, Herden said the lush patches are smooth enough for players to make confident strokes.
He compared the Royal’s greens to August, saying that the well-designed patches will make putting faster.
"If you were concentrating on that, which is something I don't focus on, others that do would ask the club to grow rough in, grow their fairways in, something like that,'' he said.
However, the tournament’s Director was keen to point out that players will see a firm course, providing them a wider room to make huge putts.
"They'll be firmish, they'll be very playable,'' he said. “It's a great test and the players will appreciate that. The stronger players will appreciate it a bit more''.
The Women’s Aussie Open will offer a whopping $1.1 million purse in a bid to lure big names in women’s golf.
With the date set for the event, leading players have already committed to shine at Royal Melbourne.
Players who will be featuring in the event also include Karrie Webb.  Webb’s presence will make the event more competitive.
