Royal Melbourne tops the list of best courses in Australia
After staging plenty of prestigious events, Royal Melbourne has made a name for itself once again, becoming the best course in Australia for the year 2012.
Royal Melbourne has been enjoying a good reputation for years and now getting to the top of the list of the best Aussie courses after two years has highlighted its uniqueness.
The competition of best courses was conducted by Australian Golf Digest. The Digest assessed Royal Melbourne’s West Course in various aspects and put it on top of the list.
Golf Digest has been hosting competition among Aussie courses, gauging their quality. The competition does more than awarding the positions on the list, as it conducts debates on how to further improve courses in Australia.
Royal Melbourne’s East Course has been distinct in its quality, topping the list till 2010. However, for the last two years, the number one position had been held by other courses.
For instance, in 2009, Kingston Heath was picked as the best after it staged the prestigious Australian Masters.
Royal Melbourne is best known for its lovely greens and challenging holes. This is why most players like to play the course, despite the fact there are several other courses Australia, which offer the same facilities as Royal Melbourne does.
Grandly known as the pinnacle of golf in the country, Royal Melbourne has staged more events than any other Australian course did in recent years.
Last year, the much-hyped Presidents Cup was staged at Royal Melbourne, putting it in the spotlight for its marvellous greens and other amenities.
A number of players have expressed their desire to play the course just because it has a long history to feature prominent faces.
Recently, Women’s Australian Open was played at the course, with a number of leading golfers on the roster.
Despite its eminence, Royal Melbourne has a couple of hard holes that strike fear into players.
For instance, before the start of Women’s Aussie Open, several players had predicted that the course would prove challenging due to a number of tricky holes and fairways.
Director of the Open, Trevor Herden had also expressed her thoughts, saying she agreed with the players because the course has proved its toughness in several tournaments it staged over the years.
Now, being atop the list of best courses in Australia once again, Royal Melbourne officials are set to stage upcoming events in a more efficient fashion.
