Royal Mint issues offside coins for London Olympics 2012
The Royal Mint has recently revealed their latest design for a 50p coin that has been specially made for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The coin is unique in the sense that it features one of the football rules that confuses several people. The 50p Olympic coin graphically explains the international rule for offside in football.
The designer of the coin is the famous sports journalist based in London, Neil Wolfson. The coin is one in a series of 50p coins that have been specially made for the Olympic Games and will be featuring a total of 29 sports that form a part of the Olympics
as well as the Paralympics and are going to be featured in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Wolfson commented on the inspiration of the 50p design in the following manner, “I’m a football fan, I followed the Premier League since its inception and if I had 50p for every time someone had asked me to explain the offside rule I’d be a very rich man.”
On the other hand, Susannah Lee, a spokeswoman from the Royal Mint commented on the coins in the following way, “It’s an unusual and eye catching design and has generated significant interest from collectors and sports fans as a result. The coin depicts
a clear representation of the offside rule which I think is useful and easily understood for anyone who happens to find it in their purse or pockets.”
The 50p coins that have the offside rule illustrated on them are half a million in amount. These exclusive Olympic coins have been brought into the circulation.
The design of the off side coin has not gone unnoticed by the Royal Canadian Mint. The Royal Canadian Mint has not failed to issue coins irrespective of the location of the Olympic Games and they also aim to come up with extraordinary designs this time around.
The city of London will become the first city in the world to have the honour of successfully hosting the Games for the third time in its history. London got the winning bid in the year 2005.
