  1. The Duchess of Cornwall was a royal mistress, until she married the Prince of Wales.  The former King Edward had a mistress whom he eventually married, after giving up the throne.

  2. During the 20th century, as many women became better educated and more able to support themselves, fewer women found satisfaction in the position of being a mistress and were more likely to pursue relationships with unmarried men. Since divorce became more socially acceptable, it was now easier for men to divorce their wives and marry the women who, in earlier eras, would have been their mistresses. However, the practice of having a mistress still existed among some married men, especially the wealthy. In Europe, for example, many cultures continued to acknowledge and condone the practice of keeping mistresses. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall is an example of a royal mistress who eventually married her long time lover, The Prince Charles of Wales.

  3. mass media put an effective end to such things,as you have asked. But do really think the heir apparent will marry that girl I doubt it.

  4. UMMM what do YOU call Camilla Parker Bowles????  I call her the Royal Mistress -- well, just 'cause he went and married her doesn't mean it was legit for 15 years.

  5. These days it is impossible to have secret liaisons with anyone so mistresses are a thing of the past in the royal family. The paparrazi are always there & miss nothing.

  6. Camilla was a royal mistress.  She wasn't a mistress en titre (in title) because women are more well respected and it is disrespectful to your wife to keep a mistress.  Also, the marriages were arranged and had nothing to do with love, and Prince Charles chose to marry Diana.  She was not the daughter of another King that he was forced to marry for state reasons.  The last reason is that now, the Royals can more easily get a divorce.

Charles is not different than Henry VIII, divorcing his wife, and then marrying his long time mistress.  He just didn't make it as public as it has been in the past, when the mistresses sometimes took the place of the wives at royal functions.  Come to think of it - nothing has changed, except the lifetime imprisonment and the beheadings.
