Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force to give flag bearers for victory ceremonies at London 2012
It has recently been announced that the Service personnel from the armed forces of the United Kingdom will be the flag bearers for the Team Welcome and Victory Ceremonies when the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games as well as the Paralympic Games take place.
The service personnel have been recruited from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom.
The chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, Sebastian Coe, expressed himself on the matter in the following manner, “The flag raising duties at Olympic and Paralympic Games are seen as an honour but we are in fact honoured to have
these inspirational men and women be part of London 2012.”
On the other hand, Hugh Robertson, the United Kingdom’s minister for Sport and the Olympics, shared his views by giving the following statements, “Our Armed Forces are world renowned for their ceremonial excellence. As a former serviceman myself I am delighted
that they will perform such an important role at the Games.”
The service personnel that have been selected for acting as the flag bearers for the ceremonies went through a nomination process that was over seen by the Ministry of Defence. The criteria that was chosen to select the flag bearers was personnel having
sporting or operational achievements or those who had been active in their local communities.
The Victory Ceremonies will take place throughout the duration of the Olympic Games which are scheduled to commence from July 27 and last until August 12.
Overall, the total number of victory ceremonies will be 805. These Victory Ceremonies will have the spectatorship of the millions of spectators that will be present at the Olympic venues. Not only that, the world television audience who will be in tuned
to the Olympics as well as the Paralympic Games will also be watching the Victory Ceremonies.
According to tradition, the Victory Ceremonies at an Olympics as well as Paralympic Games take place after the ending of any medal event at the Games. The Victory Ceremonies feature the National anthem of the country of the gold medal holding athlete.
