Royal and Ancient committee organizes golf clinic in Cambodia
Royal & Ancient committee organized a junior golf clinic at Phokeethra Country Club in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to spread awareness on the sport amongst amateur golfers.
The hub of European and American golf decided to go to Cambodia just before the onset of Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open to set a golf market in the region. Cambodia is the prospect market for the sport and is it yet to be explored
by the R&A.
According to stats, there are only two golf facilities in Cambodia, which are less than a decade old. Three new facilities are in process, while a new project is underway in Phnom Penh. Looking at the niche, the golf manufacturers
and companies associated with the sport are looking forward of making a setup there, but before that people need to be given exposure about the sport.
Director of Golf Development, Duncan Weir explained the agenda of the golf clinic in a press conference held in the clubhouse of the Phokeethra Country Club. He said that Cambodia had a humongous amount of talent, but there was
a deficit of channels in the area that would give exposure to the fresh blood and give them formal golf training, hence R&A was trying to play their role in exploring it.
He added, “The provision of tuition to disadvantaged boys and girls is a key aspect, and an important goal, of The R&A’s golf development activity. Reliant upon the support of the PGAs of Europe, clinics like this one in Cambodia
are the cornerstone of our drive to make golf more available and more affordable to more people in more parts of the world.”
A total of 55 participants between ages of 8 and 16 attended the golf clinic. The participants were mostly students, and a few of them also belonged to orphanages. Swing coaches, provided by Professional Golfers Association of
Great Britain and Ireland and Phokeethra Golf Club, gave these children a few basic golf lessons.
David Maxwell, a member at the Professional Golfers Association of Great Britain and Ireland, Jack Hedges, the golf operations manager at Phokeethra, R&A’s Director – Asia/Pacific, Dominic Wall and Roger Hunt, captain of the Australian national side at
Eisenhower Trophy, provided the services of coaching.
