Question:

Royal family costs us £s per year, shouldn't we have a vote (maybe every 4 years) to keep them?

They cost us 66p each, a report today said. That's each person in Britain, i.e school kids and unemployed who pay nothing. I probably pay about £10 a year being a very high tax payer, and aside from the Queen, I can't stand them as people. Surely we should be able to vote who our rulers are, like we do a government?

  1. This is another headline grabbing figure produced from thin air designed to put people off the Royal family.

I am personally happy to pay this money to keep them as they provide more stability for the country than ever Flash Gordon can provide and they also earn a lot of money for the country indiectly through tourism etc.

Better to pay 66p to them rather than a lot more to keep terrorist asylum seekers here (how much does that cost us, by the way?), not to mention the pay rises that MPs have just awarded themselves.

In addition, the Queen only rules us through her government, so if we don't like the policies, we simply change the government.  She is head of state and does not make decisions on whether to go to war in Iraq or not (unfortunately).

  2. time to be rid of royal family as time goes by they become more and more of an embarrasment they have had a 1000yr good run of s******g the working man time to say good bye. please dont tell me they make lots of money through tourism ,tourists see tower ,buck palace ,crown jewels etc they dont get audience with any of royals tourism will be the same without royals and we can use money saved to build a nice new hospital every year.

  3. I agree that they should be voted in or out every four years.  Personally I think the Queen and Prince William should be left alone, but votes taken for all the others including their hangers on!

I personally do not care if it only costs me one penny to keep them, the Royals are rich in their way so can keep themselves. The money spent on the Royals can go towards something or somebody that needs it e.g. nurses pay rise, oap, needy, National Health Service etc etc.

I am not a republican I do have great respect for the Queen and the work she does but at the end of the day she is a wealthy woman and can afford to take care of herself.  First vote out for me would be Prince Andrew, then lets see him go to golf in Scotland on the train or driving, just like us poor people have to do, no helicopter to fly us to a golf match.

  4. I agree. But I also would like to see this royal family fired, and a new one put in their place. I'm tired of the same old people in the throne all this time. I would love to see a fresh new familiy sitting in there.  They're half german anyways, we should have a full blooded English family. Or at least Irish.

  5. This is where your taxes REALLY go, people:

Can we have a vote to rid our country of scrounging scum like this?

Personally I'm happy to pay 66p to keep Her Majesty.  She does more for this country than any of her critics ever have or will.

  6. Oh boo hoo.

Personally I can spare 66p a year to ensure Britain retains it's history and tradition that gives it so much appeal around the world. What would we have without it? Come and see where the Beckhams decide to grace us with their presence for a month a year? Not exactly the same is it?

Even if you pay a tenner a year, you evidently can spare that too. You probably 5 times that much in alcohol every week. (Or at least most people do.)

Give Britain some hope will you?

  7. They royal but they do cost us a lot

  8. this is rediculous youve got people that do bugger all have no intention on working and just scrounge off the state at about 60 quid a week and you are complaining about £5 a week get real long live the queen

  9. Representing the cost in this way is cheap, shabby and dishonest. Go to www.republic.org.uk to find an indication of the TRUE cost.

  10. it depends on how much they bring in due to tourism every year. They actually put Britain on the map, people only know of us cause of the royal family. I have no problem with it.

i bet if i told you that mr.abdul next door gets a free house and benefits for all his six children for doing nothing you'd call me racist.

  11. I'd rather the money goes to the royal family them some family that's been skiving off the state for generation after generation. At least the Royal Family works.

I'm proud to be a native of a country that has well over 1000 years of history in its monachy.

    Long live the Queen

  12. The last poll said 84% where in favour of the Monarchy, so the decession was made that a referendum would be a massive waste of time and money.

why are people giving me thumbs down, Im only stating the reason that there wasnt a referundum, Im not stating support either way.

  13. I think you are confusing running costs with capital costs.

  14. Just wait for I short while - I don't think they will last much longer.  I think that there will be a referendum when Charles comes to the throne.  I don't believe the British people will put up with him.

  15. Vive la Republique!
