  1. I don't think it did.  In countries that adopted Protestantism, it was often thrust on an unwilling population by the powers that be (as in England for instance).  If anything, in England protestantism enhanced the royal state, since the King became head of the Church of england, and acknowledged no higher authority on earth, whereas in Catholic countries the Pope was considered head of the church.

  2. I believe that they felt that the royals controlled too much of their lives and that some didnt listen to the teaching of God.

  3. Okay, here goes. it may sound a bit like a sermon, but the Reformation is about religious change.

The Protestant Reformation fueled the idea of resistance to the Royal State because.

Reformers taught personal, individual freedom, with respect to God's authority.

The People were able to read the Bibles in their own languages (the Roman Catholics had kept it in Latin - for fear that the average man on the street would read it and come up with personal interpretations that went against the church.), and discovered that many of the Roman Churches teachings were extra-biblical. They began to deeply distrust the Roman church and ANY King who stood in support of it. Also many got an education so that they could thoroughly understand the Bible. In fact, it was the Reformers who first educated girls.

These are the doctrines the Protestants taught that separated them from Rome and the King. These doctrines fueled the idea that the Pope and Kings were in cahoots to take their souls.

    b.  Justification By Faith - that because all men are sinners (Romans 3:23) the only punishment for their works, good or bad, is death. (Romans 6:23a) However, God loved mankind and sent his son to be the sacrifice for sins. (I John 4:1, Romans 6:23b). Christ died in our stead, therefore, anyone who by faith believes Jesus Christ's death, burial and resurrection and confesses this belief before God, is covered by the bood of Christ and is declared not guilty before God forever. (Romans 3:24,Romans 10:9) It is not of good works. (Titus 3:5) Therefore, the believer not need fear h**l fire, because he is forever not guilty before God. God becomes the justifier, not a church, or good works. Therefore, whether a person is pope, king, or serf every man stands before God in the same way and is justified the same way. NO ONE is exempt.

This doctrine put the Pope and King on the same level as the average man before God. Therefore, the Pope and King were no higher or lower (whether they be of blue blood or not) than the average man.

    B. Priesthood Of The Believer - that every Christian has direct access to God through prayer and the truths found in the Bible without the help of an aristocracy or hierarchy of priests. (I Peter 2:9)

    C.      Individual Soul Liberty - Put simply, every individual is responsible only to God in matters of conscience. Any person, anywhere, anytime, can choose the spiritual direction the individual's life will take. (Romans 14:7-12)

These last two teaching separated the man on the street from the church and the King forever, in matters of conscience and spirituality - every man was free to believe and serve God as he chose and not as some Pope in Rome or some King in England, or Prince in Germany ordered them to. Therefore every man could do what was right under the law of the land according to his conscience. If a law of the land went against the principle of the Bible, then that law was illegal and did not need to be followed. When the King refused to change laws - the citizens Had the right to revolt.

The Peasant War in Germany started much this way. The Holy Roman Emperor refused to acknowledge the teachings of Marting Luther (whom they thought  had been kidnapped and killed by the Holy  Roman Emperor  - he wasn't - he ws in fact grabbed by Prince Frederick of Saxony [his protector] before he could be captured by the Emperor) so the Peasants revolted against him in Germany. They burnt Catholic churches; martryed priests, nuns and monks; and looted the churches. Of course, Luther came back and told them that liberty was not about forcing people to believe and stopped the violence.

If you'd like more information - go rent the movie LUTHER. It's Martin Luther's story and it conveys quite well the mood and events of the times.
