Royalty - A lot of Questions?

I'm latin american. I don't know to much about Royalty in Countries like England or Spain (well Spain a little), well I'd like to know how it began, how it ruled, why it stopped ruling, which are the functions in the current goverments? Which is ur opinion? Thx a lot. Alejandro.
