How come a lot of members of the Royal Family have so many names? For example, Mary of Teck has at least nine names and Prince Charles has four.

  1. yep, many

  2. Actually, most royal remembers are named after a few of their ancestors. Some middle names sound antiquated because they are chosen from those of the family's ancestors, as the royal parents may have chosen them by glancing over the family tree. The British upper classes are traditionally fond of taking multiple middle names. Many British monarchs are delighted in honoring their royal heritage by bestowing their children with multiple middle names of some relative, parents and grandparents etc. For example, names found in Prince William (William Arthur Philip Louis, Prince Harry (Henry Charles Albert David), or Princess Anne (Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise) were all previously used by a monarch, a consort, a princess or prince by past British royal members.

  3. To make them unique!

I have 3 and a double barrelled surname, so 5 over all :)

I won't say them, but i know i'm totally unique, which is a cool thought :)

  4. It's traditional for royals to honor members of their families by using so many given-names.Titled royals really don't use surnames, but they certainly use names of past family members in the given names: the present Queen's names honors Elizabeth, her grandmother Mary, and her great-grandmother Alexandra.
